Three of America’s top journalism organizations have honored ICIJ and its media partners with four more awards for the Panama Papers investigation.
These accolades include:
- Two awards from Investigative Reporters and Editors, including the IRE award for innovation in investigative journalism and the Gannett Award for innovation.
- The American Society of News Editors’ O’Brien Fellowship Award for impact in public service journalism.
- The Society of American Business Editors and Writers’ “Best-in-Business” Award for reporting on banking and finance.
The ANSE awards judges praised the Panama Papers investigative team for “the breadth of its reporting, the strength of the partnership that yielded this effort and the global impact that resulted.”
The IRE judges said the team “showed exceptional ingenuity and skill by developing new tools and approaches that facilitated the unprecedented collaboration, and demonstrated a new model for journalistic co-operation to expose dealings of hundreds of thousands of entities. The results from this project around the world are testimony to its impact. It clearly made public something that others would want to keep secret.”
These four honors mark a total of 17 times that ICIJ’s work on the Panama Papers investigation has been recognized with national or international journalism accolades. Other honors for ICIJ and its reporting partners have included the George Polk Award and the Barlett & Steele Gold Medal for business and financial reporting.
ICIJ, Süddeutsche Zeitung, McClatchy, the Miami Herald, Fusion, Swedish Television and more than 100 other news outlets from around the globe worked together on the Panama Papers collaboration, a year-long investigation that cracked open the world of offshore money laundering and tax dodging by sifting through a leak of 11.5 million financial and corporate documents.
