Mónica Almeida, Ecuador, is an independent journalist with more than 30 years of experience.

She was the chief of El Universo’s investigative section, and also managed its main regional office for two decades at the country’s capital, Quito.

Almeida started as a reporter for Hoy newspaper in 1987. Later she did an internship at Europ magazine, published by the Paris-based Foundation Journalistes en Europe, and also worked as a reporter and editor for Agence France Presse in Paris.

As a fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, she specialized in investigative journalism. She is a member of the Connectas Hub and also works with CLIP.

She has become a defender of journalism standards at a time when press freedom is under attack in Ecuador. She co-authored “El séptimo Rafael” (2017), a profile about former Ecuadorean president Rafael Correa, and “La revolución malograda” (2023), a series of ten features about Correa’s decade in government.
